Forty Days in the Desert

Today’s Gospel (Mk 1:12-15) opens with Jesus being driven into the desert, and being tempted by Satan for forty days. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel that better describes my last forty years. For me, the beginning of lent always seems like it will last for another forty years.

The prospect of giving up something I likes seems impossible. I am sure I will fall or fail. Someone wise, probably my parents, once told me that the best way to get through lent is to take it one day at a time, and know that there is Easter waiting for you at the end.

Once we get to that end, the forty days will not seem as long as I feared they would. This is a great metaphor for life as well. The temptations all around us can seem overwhelming at times. If we do what is right, get up when fall down, we will make it to the glorious end. I pray that each of you has a meaningful Lent, and that we will all find peace and happiness in the resurrections.
